Worker training modules

The NDIS Commission has created online training modules that help NDIS workers understand their role and obligations and better support people with disability. These modules were co-designed and developed in consultation with the sector, including people with disability and NDIS providers and workers.

When you complete a module, you’ll get a certificate of completion. The certificate is valid indefinitely.

Worker Orientation Module: Quality, safety and you

This module is an interactive online course that explains the obligations of workers under the NDIS Code of Conduct from the perspective of NDIS participants.

Registered NDIS providers need to include the module in their induction process for workers and encourage existing workers to undertake the module over time as part of their ongoing learning and to support compliance with the NDIS Code of Conduct.

It takes approximately 90 minutes to complete the four modules.

During the module, workers are encouraged to consider and respond to different scenarios in the context of supporting a person with disability. After finishing the module, workers will have an understanding of the role of the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission and their roles and responsibilities under the Code of Conduct including human rights, respect and risk.

New worker – NDIS induction modules

This program of New Worker - NDIS induction modules has been developed to support providers when they induct new staff who may not be familiar with the disability sector.

It is made up of a series of eight online modules that provide new workers with specific information they need to start working in the disability sector. These are:

  3. Safe workplace
  4. NDIS Code of Conduct and Dignity of risk
  5. Incident management
  6. Know the person
  7. Risk identification and management

This training does not replace the specific training employers will provide to new workers to perform their duties, and training on their organisation’s specific policies and procedures.

Supporting effective communication

Effective communication upholds the rights of people with disabilities to have choice and control and to make decisions about their own lives. With effective communication, workers can support and enable people to express themselves, to be heard and be safe.

So how can you, as an NDIS worker, best support effective communication?

The Supporting Effective Communication online learning module demonstrates – from the perspective of NDIS participants – what effective communication looks like, and how it supports choice and control.

The module is free and available to anyone. It takes 60 to 90 minutes to complete the four topics. There are Auslan and audio described versions available.

Communication is a fundamental human right. People with disability have the same right to communicate as anyone.

Communication is fundamental to participating and being included in society. It enables us all to create meaningful connections and interactions with each other, have access to our communities and express our preferences and needs.

the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission has a new online learning module for support workers on how you can best support effective communication with the people you work with. It's free, available online and can be done at your own pace.

In this module we're exploring all the different ways people communicate. We're also going to look at what you can do as a worker in the disability sector to ensure effective communication with the people you're working with, and the times when this it's particularly important for a person's independence and health.

You'll learn through real stories and practical tips how to become a good communication partner with the people you support. We like to look at it as a communication partnership - a two-way process which includes getting to know the person you're supporting; taking the time to listen, and understanding the specific communication needs and methods of each person.

As a worker in the National Disability Insurance Scheme, it's your responsibility and obligation to uphold the rights of people with disability, and this includes supporting effective communication.

It's written in the NDIS Code of Conduct that no matter how someone communicates, it's your job to support and enable people to express themselves, be heard, and be safe.

So what's your role in supporting effective communication?

Supporting safe and enjoyable meals

Mealtimes are an important part of our daily lives. Having access to meals that are safe and enjoyable is important to minimise the risk of choking and serious health problems for people with swallowing difficulty; and to improve their quality of life.

Under the NDIS Code of Conduct, NDIS workers have to provide supports and services in a safe and competent manner, with care and skill.

So how can NDIS workers best support someone who needs mealtime support?

This online learning module is available to help NDIS workers understand how to best support safe and enjoyable mealtimes.

It takes approximately 90 minutes to complete the four topics. There are Auslan and audio described versions available.

Mealtimes are an important part of our daily lives. They're also a time to enjoy food and drink, be social, and be part of cultural celebrations.

As someone working in the disability sector, your role in providing meal time assistance is really important. People with swallowing difficulty are at risk of choking on food which can be fatal, but there's a lot we can do to reduce the risk of choking so people can enjoy safe meals.

The NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission has an online learning module on how you can best support people to have safe and enjoyable meals. It's free, available online, and can be done at your own pace.

In this module we will look at the importance of following the meal time plan; ways to notice the signs and symptoms of swallowing difficulty; how to prepare meals of the right texture; support good positioning; and the use of assistive technology or equipment like cutlery.

You'll learn through real stories and practical tips how to provide safe and enjoyable meals for the people that you support.

As a support worker under the NDIS Code of Conduct, you have an obligation to provide supports and services in a safe and competent manner with care and skill.

So when it comes to someone with swallowing difficulty, how do you best support them to have safe and enjoyable mealtimes?
